Makeup By Tonya
I was asked by La Cima Middle School to develop a workshop for young ladies who want to become a makeup artist. The administrators were amazed at the multiple requests for makeup artistry. This was the first year they had ever offered this workshop.
So, the teacher in me went to work. I developed the first Makeup By Tonya Training manual for future makeup artist! Working towards my Ph.D. in Curriculum is coming in handy.
The room was decorated with tons of makeup, face charts, handouts, and books relating to makeup artistry. Books written by Bobbie Brown, Scott Barnes, Sam Fine etc. filled the room! Of course, I had my music blaring (it’s a MAC thing).
When the students arrived they were met by me, wearing classic black, at the door with my music blasting and the slideshow of my portfolio running. There were over 20 people in the class. I was overwhelmed and very excited.
After introductions, I was able to share videos from my experience at New York Fashion Week as well as the AVEDA Congress show in Minneapolis. I also talked about being a permanent makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics.
Throughout the workshop I provided demonstrations on skin preparation, sculpting the face, and the smokey eye. I believe in hands on learning so after I taught each section students were able to put the new information to work. From start to finish I was adamant about proper sanitation.
Even at a young age, the attendees were interested in learning how to properly create a smokey eye.
The students were super excited to try out the techniques I demonstrated for them .
I felt it was important to talk about more than just the artistry side of being a makeup artist. We also discussed being self employed, marketing, social media, and the earning potential of a makeup artist.
I am always interested in knowing if my teaching has been effective. So, I created a short survey. Students were super excited to receive free makeup for completing the surveys. (Nothing motivates an artist more than to receive FREE makeup!)
I asked the students two simple questions: 1. Name two NEW things you learned today? 2. What would you add to the workshop to make it better?
Some of the responses included…
“Eyeshadow on top of your liner helps it stay”
“The smokey eye is a style, not a color”
“I learned how to moisturize the face”
” I learned that you need to sanitize your hands and always ask if you can touch the client’s face”
I am so proud of the students! They were very quick learners.
Two hours was not nearly enough. I would love to offer this workshop again.

MERCEDES BENZ NEW YORK FASHION WEEK ~ ZANG TOI FALL 2012
Once again I was fortunate to be a part of the BeautybyRudy makeup team sponsored by the wonderful women at Amazing Cosmetics. For the Fall 2012 season, we worked with designer Zang Toi to create a cinematic look (see my recent post on the makeup look for more details).
This season’s collection popped with bold colors such as red, pink, and orange on the back drop of the classic black and white. I literally wanted to bring EVERY piece home with me!
Zang is so kind and personable. It’s a true honor to work with him. He is a phenomenal designer. The architecture of his designs compliments femininity to the fullest.
As I arrived to the freezing New York weather of course I was met by the traffic. My plane landed at 9:15am and the call time to be backstage was 9:45 am! I sent Rudy a text and of course he was gracious which eased my mind.
When I arrived at Lincoln Center, I walked confidently up to the very muscular attendant and said “I’m with the makeup team” and kept on walking (It actually worked!) Whew!
There were both familiar and new faces on the BeautybyRudy team this season. It was good to be in the company of family. After hugs and kisses it was time to work. Rudy was doing a demonstration of the look and I jumped right in.
The chaos of being backstage, prepping for the show, is so energizing. I love it! We are moving 100 miles per hour but still able to pose for quick pics, Tweet, and have fun!
On a funny note, I was in shear terror walking around backstage doing lip touchups of RUBY RED lipsticks around WHITE fur! The whole time I was praying, ”Lord please don’t let me get red lipsticks on Zang’s white fur–you know I can’t pay for it!!”
I have to admit, there is nothing like seeing your work come down the runway. As an artist it is a humbling feeling to know your work has now been seen around the world.
Loving makeup,
Tonya
While in New York for Fashion Week I had to partake in the diversity of the city. After doing makeup for the Zang Toi show and catching up on my sleep we headed out into the cold. Nestled in Harlem is an unforgettable restaurant. My husband Kelvin and I found Chocolat Restaurant Lounge on Frederick Douglas Boulevard. We were celebrating Valentine’s Day early and we wanted to find just the right spot.
The ambiance made me want to order a glass a wine and I don’t even drink. Kelvin and I just loved being at Chocolat. Our server was gracious and gave us impeccable service.
It was about 28 degrees outside so for dinner so I chose the shrimp and grits. I was looking for something that would be filling. Kelvin went with the crab cakes for his entree. After my first bite I fell in love. This comfort food was filling and delicious. The food was excellent and the conversation with Kelvin was the same.
For dessert Kelvin and I shared a chocolate molten lava cake! I asked for it to be warmed up. That cake did not have a chance at our table. We devoured it!
We both agreed that when we return to New York we will make our way to Chocolat.
Just before heading to the airport we also wanted to check out a restaurant we have heard about for years - Syliva’s Soul Food on Lenox Avenue. I knew as soon as we sat down and they put the cornbread in front of me it was over.
I could tell by the multitude of pictures of legends such as the Temptations, The Clark Sisters, and Nelson Mandela I was in a very special place.
Making our way to catch our flight I quickly skimmed the menu and zeroed in on the smothered pork chops. I added greens, yams, mac and cheese and of course more cornbread. Living in Arizona I don’t really have many opportunities to eat like this.
Needless to say, Sylvia is now one of my favorite New York restaurants .
Here’s to good eating,
Tonya
I made it to the Big Apple!!! What an exciting time!
Zang is so gracious to every artist and stylist and makes you feel like you are a long time friend.

Without a doubt bold red lips are a hot trend for 2012 beyond Valentine’s Day!!
When worn correctly, red lips are chic and sophisticated. And,if you don’t have YOUR red ready for Valentine’s Day…it’s not too late!
I know some of you’re saying “No, not me!”. But the truth is most women can wear a red lip, you just need to find the right shade of red that matches your unique look.
As it relates to reds, there are plum reds, blue reds, orange reds, brown reds, etc. As you can tell, YOU have choices.
As you set out to find YOUR red, please keep in mind that red lipsticks tend to bleed. So, please, please invest in a complimentary lip liner. Line your lips FIRST. Then, fill it in with the lipstick you choose.
When I wear a red lip, I want my lips to be the focal point of my face.
To compliment your bold red lip:
Eyes: Little or no liner. Lots of mascara or false lashes with a flare on the outer corners.
Cheeks: Subtle and soft tones. Contour cheeks.
Complexion: Satin or Matte finish.
I look forward to seeing lots of beautiful red lips this year.
Please post any questions or comments below and I will respond.
Have fun,
Tonya
For Valentine’s day give your skin a sweet treat! After a luxurious facial at the Hashani Spa (JW Marriott Resort – Tucson, Az) I had to find out what the esthetician used to make my skin super smoothe, bright, and healthy.
A key to flawless looking makeup is great skin care. It’s not about having super model skin, it’s about taking care of YOUR skin.
Here is the sweet miracle…Sweet Cherry Enzyme Peel by Naturopathica ($59).
This was the first time I had a face peel. I must admit I was a little nervous. But at the end I literally felt like I had new skin. It was super smoothe. I found my self in the mirror just amazed at how healthy my skin looked and felt. Even a week later my skin maintained the same vibrancy as the day I left the spa.
After a little in investigation, I discovered why this product was such a sweet treat for my skin.
The key ingredients:
Sweet Cherry Purée – Packed full of vitamins that act as antioxidants and anti-flammatory agents.
Lactic acid – Exfoliates, moisturizes, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. (This is definitely important to me! )
Wine Extract – Detoxifies, brightens, purifies, and soothes skin.
Using this product is simple. On a clean face apply a thin layer of the product. Leave it on for 3-5 minutes then rinse. You should definitely wear a sunscreen after using the product because it is a peel. Be sure to follow up with a moisturizer.
I love this product and I know you will too!
Your skin will thank you for this sweet treat!
Happy Valentine’s Day!!
Tonya
UPDATE: I will also be assisting Celebrity Makeup Artist Maisie Dunbar for an additional show in NY!!! These are great opportunities for me to learn and grow!!!
I am soooo excited to be announce I am heading back to New York for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week show with Zang Toi!! The Fall 2012 shows run February 9th – 16th.
I can’t wait to see the new Zang Toi collection and I am even more elated to work with the Beauty By Rudy makeup team again. This awesome team consists of artist from all over the country. I look forward to seeing my very talented friends again.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE New York! The city is filled with so much life and the food is out of this world. The cab rides were terrifying but now I am looking forward to them.
I think I have grown as an artist since my last time at NYFW in September. I can’t wait to see my artistry hit the runway in New York again!
New York….here I come!!!
Tonya
As you may recall, I was recently made a permanent makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics in January. I started as a freelance makeup artist on December 5th and was offered a permanent position the following week. Of course I accepted the position.
I took some time off from blogging to really focus on becoming acclimated to the MAC world. But….I’m back!
My plan is to give you my thoughts about new MAC collections from an insiders perspective as well as other product lines and beauty products. I also plan to start making makeup tutorials on Youtube (with both MAC products and other product lines as well).
Now that my first month as permanent artist is coming to an end, all I can say is…. WOW!!!
I absolutely love the artists I am working with. They have taken me under their wing and constantly avail themselves to answer all my questions. I just learned that in March I will attend a 5-day Basic Training in beautiful Scottsdale, Arizona. I am so excited!!
Believe me when I say there is literally a MAC world. Like any organization there are certain features and characteristics unique to that community. MAC cosmetics is no different. As an artist in this community, you have to master successfully balancing artistry, product knowledge, customer service, and sales. At the end of the day, MAC is still a business and the expectation to sell products is present. Estee Lauder is a good company to work for. The perks are GREAT!!!
On the customer side, there are actual MAC – addicts who are die hard fans of MAC Cosmetics. I thought I was bad but apparently, I am just scratching the surface. If you don’t believe me, do a quick search of MAC cosmetics on Youtube. MAC addicts know one thing is true, when MAC says an item is limited edition, you may want to buy two. When it runs out, it runs out.
As a newborn in the MAC world, I can honestly say, I literally learn something new everyday. That works for me because I love learning new things. I am growing as an artist and I love the opportunities I have to paint beautiful faces.
Stay tuned for more from the MAC World…
Tonya
As I prepare to have a great time with my family the artist in me is also excited. What shadows will wear today? I have already decided to make my eyes the focal point.
For sure I will use MAC’s Buckwheat shadow in my crease with it’s velvet finish. Lately I am really enjoying the way this color accents my caramel skin tone. I discovered this color in MAC’s Snowglobe Eye Shadows (warm palette). [A review/blog of this palette is coming soon!]
Now all I need is a little pop of color! I was inspired by the above Thanksgiving image to go with something in the orange family. Of course, that means Sugarpill’s Flamepoint Eyeshadow.
I know it sounds crazy but wait until you see the end result!
1. After adding a primer to the eyelid Flamepoint eyeshadow was added on the upper lid, inner corner, and 1/3 of the lower lash line.
2. Follow with Buckwheat eyeshadow in the crease. Be sure to blend the shadow upward to avoid harsh lines.
3. Highlight with a shimmery creamy tone.
4. Brown liner was used on the top lid and bottom waterline.
5. Finish with adding Buckwheat under the lower lash line.
*False lashes really help the bright orange shadow to stand out.
Try this look and leave a comment.
Enjoy,
T-
Yes! I love setting a goal and accomplishing it! Some people call me ambitious and I am ok with that.
Because I am a certified teacher and school administrator; the desire to learn new things comes naturally. I love acquiring new information and then applying it. Makeup artistry allows me to apply new techniques to create new looks and educate others in the process. How rewarding!
Some of my friends have called me crazy for taking a break from my PhD program to grow as a makeup artist. My hairstylist jokingly said, “Who stops pursuing a PhD for makeup?”. Me. It makes me happy to hold a mirror to a client’s face and see (some for the first time) admire their own God-given beauty.
Though I have always had a love for makeup, I recently began to explore this area of artistry. So many exciting things have taken place.
A few things I have been graced to do since June 2011:
- Start my own freelance makeup artistry business
- Attend AVEDA Makeup Artistry Workshop (Tucson, AZ)
- Develop mentor relationships with two amazing makeup artists based in Arizona (Khara Williams) and New York (Rudy Miles)
- Work on the Beauty by Rudy makeup team at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week and AVEDA Congress (Minneapolis, MN)
- Invited to provide makeup demonstrations at Tucson AVEDA stores
- Launch my own blog
- Attend International Makeup Artist Trade show (Los Angeles, CA)
- Attend the Portfolio Project (Denver, CO)
- Featured Artist on KOLD Channel 13 website
The list continues to grow…
The newest addition to this amazing journey is now becoming a MAC Makeup Artist!
A few months ago I walked past a MAC counter (where I am at frequently) and said to myself “I can do that”. Quite honestly, I was initially a little intimidated about applying. But the more I practiced, the more I was convinced I could do it. My confidence also grew as I meditated on a promise…”And whatsoever he does shall prosper” (Psalm 1). In other words, I believe no matter what I put my heart to doing, it will prosper (be successful). My life is committed to Christ and He blesses me to excel at all I invest in.
So I gathered my professional portfolio, wrote a quick resume, filled out an application and was invited to do a makeup demonstration (dressed in my best black attire of course). A few days later I was offered the job as a freelance artist/on call artist. Since then, I have been called for a permanent position!
I am very excited about working for MAC because I have the honor of helping people feel good about themselves through makeup artistry. I also benefit by the opportunity to continuously enhance my skill set.
Yes, I reached my goal but in my mind success is measured by the process –tenacity to set a goal, belief in myself, and following through in spite of fear. Its not just about the goal but about how we grow during the process.
If you are ever in AZ, stop by and see me at the MAC Counter. I’ll be the one smiling and playing in makeup!
